Troop 41:
A couple quick things.
SNOW AND OUR MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT
Not sure if we are going to have “snowmageddon” as the east coast did, but
there is a prediction that weather might be difficult tomorrow night. In the
event that the weather becomes too difficult and severe, our meeting will be
cancelled.
An email will be send out by 6pm if we are going to cancel the meeting.
Please watch your email tomorrow afternoon after 6pm. Thanks.
FRIENDS OF SCOUTING from Debbie Ruggiero
This is just a friendly reminder that FOS cards are due tomorrow at our troop meeting. I will be at the meeting to collect them. If your son can’t make the meeting, it would be great if you could drop it off with Mr. Evans or give it to a scout friend to bring to the meeting. My goal is to have all the cards collected this week, so if I don’t get your card at the troop meeting, I’ll be calling you this week to arrange a time when I can pick it up. Thanks for helping make this task go so smoothly. Questions? Click Debbie to send an email.
SKI TRIP SHOPPING HELP
Would anyone be willing to help shop for groceries for the upcoming ski trip? We will be eating a Friday snack, Saturday and Sunday breakfasts and will need to supply that food. Lunch and dinner are at Devil’s Head. If you can help, please let me know in the next couple days. Thanks.
Napoleon Dynamite TALKS SCOUTS
Caught this on NPR Saturday morning. With the Boy Scouts of America turning 100 years old this month, there is a lot of press gathering. As they say, “That’s a century of merit badges, campfires, bowlines, half-hitches, jamborees and camporees, first aid and community service.” This six-minute story by guest host Audie Cornish talks to Marcos Nava, who heads up Hispanic Initiatives for the Boy Scouts, and actor Jon Heder, an Eagle Scout and star of the film Napoleon Dynamite.

SKI TRIP FORMS DUE/DRIVING HELP
The ski trip permission forms were due this past Tuesday, with check and waiver. If you want to go, haven’t turned in a form and still wish to go, please let me know by this Sunday night via email. I will make final reservations on Monday morning.
Also, we currently have 24 scouts and 5 Dads going. The dads I have listed as attending are Mark B, Ed G, Nick R and Rick K. If nothing else changes, I will need one additional driver to help take the boys up, and two additional drivers to bring boys back (Rick K is not driving back). If you can help, or you were planning on going and I do not have you listed, please let me know, thanks.

All,
A great article in Sunday’s Trib. This sounds awesome! [Maquoketa Caves - October 2010 campout].

To the Scouts and Parents of Troop 41:
As of today, everyone should have received their Troop 41 2010 Information Packet and their Friends of Scouting white card. These were both passed out at the troop meeting this week. If your son missed the meeting, I either handed you the packet today or left it at your front door. Please let me know if you did not get the information. The FOS cards need to be returned by the next troop meeting (regardless of whether you donate money or not), which is Feb.9th. If your son can’t make that meeting, please have him give it to a friend to bring to the meeting, OR drop it off with Mr. Evans, OR click Debbie Ruggiero to send me an email and I can come pick it up. Thanks, in advance, for helping me get these all collected.
The 2010 Information Packet is a wonderful resource of information. I just finished reading mine from cover to cover. If you are somewhat new, like me, check out the ‘41 Things you should know about 41′. Thanks to Barney and Brad for putting that packet together!
Thanks,
Debbie Ruggiero

YOURS IN SCOUTING,

The start of another scout year. We currently stand at 52 registered scouts, and will be adding another 5-10 new Webelos in the coming weeks. We will be planning out the scout year this Saturday, I’m confident they will find fun places and exciting things to do. Our new tents will be ordered soon and we’ll test them out in April. And, we have new leadership for the year. See troop news email for the new leaders of the troop and patrols.
ONLY 12 GUYS FOR THE PLANNING MEETING?
Every year we have at least 30 guys for planning out the scout year. I know of only 12 right now. Email me and let me know if your dog ate your permission slip and that you are going to be there, thanks.
NEW LEADERSHIP for 2010
Congratulations to the new scout leadership announced last night.
Congratulations to our new leaders, and good luck.
ORDER OF THE ARROW ELECTIONS
Congratulations to the ten scouts elected to take the Ordeal for Order of the Arrow!
UPDATED SKI TRIP FORM
Because we are a “green” troop and we do recycle, the “recycled” ski trip form had some older information on it from last year. Here is a new form.
CAMPOUT LEFTOVER ITEMS
I have a number of items that someone brought to cook with at the November outing. A medal tea kettle with top, a metal flat scooped spatula, a white water container, a pair of orange handled scissors and a can opener.

With so much to communicate by the end of the year, I neglected to mention one last thing, charitable giving.
It has been a difficult year financially for many, and overall charitable giving is down, there are a lot of organizations in need. If you are doing some year end giving, and you are looking for outlets you support, please consider “The Robert Markham Memorial Scout Fund” and the Troop 41 “Two Axles are Better than One” new trailer fund.
The Robert Markham Memorial Scout Fund
Bob Markham loved Scouting and lived the Scout Spirit every day, until his passing in 2005. He gave unconditionally and tirelessly to many, many young Boy Scouts over the course of his 50 years in the Scouting program. To honor his memory, The Robert Markham Memorial Scout Fund was established to encourage and assist those scouts who share Bob’s passion. The fund distributes awards that subsidize the cost and promote participation for high adventure trips, summer camp, outings and more. Please consider making a donation and help keep Bob’s spirit alive.
“Two Axles are Better than One” new trailer fund
Our current trailer is heavy, has one axle and no braking system. With fewer and fewer families having large trucks or vehicles capable of pulling our trailer, the decision was made a couple years ago to establish a fund to purchase a new trailer with a double axle and braking system that would allow more vehicles to pull it. Our current trailer is quickly showing it’s age and we are looking to replace it as soon as the funds are available. The fund has been active for two years and many of you have been generous. Help us in meeting our goal this year.
For more information on how to help, or if you have questions, please contact our treasurer Taylor M
Troop 41 parents and scouts:
It has been a great year for scouting and Troop 41. We had a great ski trip, visited some “new” venues which included Camp Crown in Wilmot, Wisc., and Mississippi Palisades on the Iowa border. We climbed at Vertical Endeavors, shared our campsite with the boldest raccoons ever (and a million mosquitoes) at Waterfall Glen and paddled down the Wisconsin River. Some of our older scouts went to Philmont New Mexico, others earned shooting sports merit badges at the NRA gun camp in Yorkville. We earned over 120 merit badges at Owasippe and learned that when your body temperature drops below that which is required for normal metabolism and body functions, it’s called hypothermia. We joined 10,000 other scouts at the Great Lakes Jamboree in Oshkosh to celebrate the 100 years of scouting, the second largest gathering of scouts, second only to the national Jamboree to be held this summer. We biked to and from our campout at Pratt’s Wayne Woods in Wayne, and we ended our year welcoming Webelos at Hoover, and having cold, crisp fun at our snowy campout at TFC Rochelle Adventure Ranch.
We saw six outstanding young men achieve Eagle rank, another handful complete their Eagle projects and many other scouts move along the advancement path. We saw some of our scouts turn 18 and move on, and new Webelos sign up. We gave back to the community with service hours, visited “Feed My Starving Children” and helped on Eagle projects. We raised funds with both our Pancake Breakfast and Greens/Popcorn fundraisers.
We had the help and support of many parents on campouts, fundraisers and as merit badge counselors. We had an outstanding group of scout leaders run the troop. We had A GREAT YEAR.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND…
As a volunteer organization, we work harder than ANY other young organization in Glen Ellyn. Sports have a season of practices and games. Scouting is year round. We meet every Tuesday; camp a weekend a month; a week in the summer; attend additional events and service projects; hold two Troop Court of Honors; numerous Eagle Court of Honors; attend mandatory training and council meetings; and meet with scouts outside days for merit badges and more. It takes A LOT of time, and we want to thank everyone who has lent their support this year. Really, we could not have done it without you, thanks for ALL you do. That said, we have many adult leaders who have been volunteering for years and are stepping back. We need help, lots of it. For 2010, please consider attending a Committee Meeting and learning how you can help YOUR son’s troop in even the smallest way.
OUR THANKS TO MIKE
For the past 8 years, yes, EIGHT YEARS, Mike has served our Troop as Committee Chairman, in addition to merit badge counselor, Eagle advisor and more. Mike is stepping down as Committee Chairman at year end and handing over the reins to Barney. When you see Mike, please thank him for what he has done for the Troop, and your son. Mike, along with some outstanding past leaders, has helped to transform this Troop from a group of less than ten boys with sparse, worn out equipment, to a vibrant, well funded and equipped group that we are all fortunate to be part of. Mike, many, many thanks.
OUR NEW COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
Thanks and welcome to Barney as our new Committee Chairman. Although many believe the Scoutmaster “runs” the Troop, he does not, he leads the boys. The parents serving on the Committee “run” the Troop, and the Committee Chairman acts for the Committee to lead and oversee the organization. It is a thankless job (only one thank you each 8 years!), difficult, demanding and important to the health of our Troop. Thanks Barney for volunteering to do this for US.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST EAGLE SCOUT [name removed]
[name removed] passed his Eagle Board of review and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations, you earned it! Great timing, a very nice Christmas present for your parents. Congratulations to all of you.
REGISTRATION IS DUE YESTERDAY
Some of you have still not registered for 2010 and have heard from our registration coordinator Barb. Please do not jeopardize your son’s hard work and status by not having him registered on time. We need your information to fill out the final Charter which is submitted to council. If your son does not plan on staying with the troop, please let Barb know by phone or email.
NO MEETING THIS TUESDAY OR NEXT OR NEXT
Our next regularly scheduled troop meeting is Tuesday January 12th, where you will learn who was voted to take the OA ordeal and who will lead our Troop in 2010.
OUR 2010 PLANNING EVENT
All scouts are welcome to join us at our planning party where we will eat pizza and plan out the 2010 scout year. Come ready with ideas, this IS YOUR TROOP, you decide what you will do, where you will go. Form attached.
THANK YOU SCOUTS
Due to YOUR outstanding fundraising efforts, we will be purchasing new tents. At the Committee meeting last week, they approved the decision to purchase 20 new ALPS mountaineering tents to replace the 8-year old Coleman we currently use. The tent we had erected at the last troop meeting is the tent we will be purchasing, and we will first be using them at our April campout. Great job guys in making our tent wishes a reality.
REMOVE ME FROM THIS LIST!!!! ADD ME TO THIS LIST!!!
We try to keep up-to-date with registered scouts and the emails addresses that go along with them, however, occasionally we need to ask. If you are receiving this email and no longer want to, please let me know. Likewise, if you would like an address added or changed, let me know.
